Application Example Laser Scanner

Laser scanners are optoelectronic protective devices that use diffuse reflection in accordance with the standard IEC 61496-3. The functional principle of the scanning devices is comparable to that of radar. The devices emit an infrared laser beam which is remitted onto the sensor by non-transparent objects. The distance to the object is determined based on the time difference between the emission and the reception of the light. The rotating measurement beam sweeps over a circular sector and can detect objects within this protected field.
Currently the IEC 61496-3 only contains the requirements for one Type 3 protective device following this principle.
